HOW TO

Outdoor Oasis Made Easy

As the winter months die down, we’re already dreaming of summer in the great outdoors. Fox + Chenko Interiors tells us their top three tips for creating your outdoor oasis.

Fox + Chenko Says…

Your new home oasis in 2019 is an outdoor space that flows seamlessly with your interior areas. Escape to nature to relax and unwind and make every day feel like a vacation. New technology combines performance with beauty in luxurious furnishings, décor, and fabrics to make your al fresco living a reality year-round.

Choosing furniture

Approach the design of outdoor spaces as you would the interior of your home. Look for everyday furniture pieces translated for outdoor living. Invest in well-crafted quality furnishings that are water resistant to withstand the elements and will last multiple years. Include a variety of materials to create an interesting mix of texture and finishes. A dining table of marine-grade teak or eco-friendly polymer wood, for example, pairs perfectly with dining chairs of all-weather resin wicker rattan and benches of durable powder-coated finishes in metallics or colorful hues.

Continue the design with a relaxed seating area of upholstered pieces in new specialty finishes on wrought aluminum. Enduring tops composed of Terrazzo, a polished material made of chips of marble or granite set in concrete, faux stone, or sealed concrete contrast with interesting table bases. Look for trending ceramic bases in textured patterns such as lattice.

Adding decor

Further integrate your indoor and outdoor spaces through the use of color and pattern for area rugs, cushions and pillows, and accessories. Continue with the existing color story of your interiors or try something unexpected to complement the surrounding foliage and plantings. Select fabrics for cushions and pillows on dining chairs and upholstered seating in a mix of either bright bold colors or classic neutrals like navy and soft grays. Create a well thought out design story with a mix of solids and textural weaves like modern matelassé and boucle with trending patterns like ikat stripes, chevrons, and animal prints.

Creating zones

Design outdoor spaces by arranging your furnishings in the same way you would for the interior of your home with clearly defined zones. Define your dining and seating areas with durable and washable woven area rugs in polypropylene or recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate), made from recycled water bottles, that are available in beautiful patterns and textures.

A dining area can center around one large table or be created by bunching smaller tables together for larger gatherings. High top bar tables and stools are fun and casual additions. Freestanding bars are popular and can offer storage for outdoor bar and dinnerware and even provide a place for a small refrigerator.

Designate a cozy social hub, just as you would in your indoor family room, with a variety of seating options. A low, lounge-y sectional and easy chairs arranged around a low cocktail table and accent tables, creates a perfect space to relax. Finally, include one of the year’s hottest trends – an outdoor fire table or pit in concrete or wood, which lets you enjoy your outdoor space year-round.
