“A dimly lit room with minimal natural light doesn’t have to be a buzzkill,” says designer Don Massenburg. “One way to solve the low-light issue is to embrace it by aiming for moody and romantic.” Massenburg suggests a large light fixture that brings a strong glow to add brightness, with oversize mirrors to spread it even farther.

Rich neutrals and luxurious textures make things feel serene without being sedate. Oak chests flanking the upholstered headboard provide plenty of storage while introducing a graphic pattern to the room. A pair of curvy ottomans at the foot of the bed offset the angles of the chests and mirrors. (Plus, all that symmetry is pleasing to the eye.)

Massenburg chose a deep-gray wall color with a low sheen for some drama and coziness. To create dimension, he added trim molding and a chair rail, an easy way to lend architectural detail and interest.

Oak with bone inlay, the diamond-patterned Gabby Home Terrance Chest ($1,305) adds a graphic pop to a bedroom bathed in neutrals. This Dalyn Cadence Pewter Abstract Rug (starting at $499) acts as a grounding statement without being too risky, thanks to a simple palette. The Renwil Livingstone Table Lamp ($328) has a traditionally industrial feel in black steel, adding some factory chic to any table.
